One-on-one with Godfrey Nobula

MPUMALANGA Black Aces captain Godfrey Nobula leads his men with aplomb despite the precarious situation they find themselves in.

Aces have been thrown a lifeline to remain in the lucrative Absa Premiership. Having finished 15th out of the 16 teams, they will take part in the playoffs. Nobula, the Taung-born defender, shared some moments with Sowetan.

Q: How old were you when you started developing an interest in sport?

A: I was about nine years old and started playing football with the likes of Lucas Tlhomelang, who was a bit older than me. I wasn’t even aware that I could make a living out of football until I joined Bloemfontein Young Tigers in 1999.

Q: Who did you support as a child and who were your heroes?

A: I supported Kaizer Chiefs and I admired Lucas Radebe, who played in the same position as me.

Q: What car do you drive?

A: A VW Polo 1.6.

Q: If money was not an issue, which car would you be driving?

A: A Ferrari.

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A: South Africa! There’s no place like home.

Q: If you could choose between Bob Marley and Peter Tosh , who would it be?

A: Bob Marley.

Q: If you could invite five famous people over for dinner, who would they be?

A: Nelson Mandela, Denzel Washington, Lucas Radebe, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Sean Connery.

Q: If you could bring one famous person back from the dead, who would it be?

A: Sizwe Motaung. We still haven’t found a replacement for him.

Q: Who is your all-time favourite musician?

A: (The late Joseph Hill’s reggae group) Culture.

Q: What is your favourite song?

A: I Got Caught Making Love by Clarence Carter.

Q: Who is your favourite actor?

A: Sean Connery.

Q: What is your favourite movie?

A: Desperado with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

Q: Have you got a celebrity crush?

A: Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Q: What do you know about global warming?

A: I’ve got no idea.

Q: What do you do in your spare time?

A: I hang out with friends.

Q: What is your favourite restaurant?

A: Any one that prepares nice food.

Q: Any embarrassing moments on or off the field?

A: I remember playing for City Pillars against Tembisa Classic. Robson Muchichwa and I tried to dispossess Emmanuel "Scara" Ngobese who was with Classic at the time near the corner flag. He put the ball between Muchichwa’s legs and I came flying in, trying to help Muchichwa out but he also nutmegged me and I ended up breaking the corner flag. After making fools of us, he played a cross and they scored.

That was really embarrassing.
